United Airlines and Partners-Securing Premium Class Awards with Star Alliance


"For all the complaints about award travel, and this is something I've written about before (and by no means to brag), I really don't have too much trouble finding award seats.
That's partly because I have a critical mass account balance with several different airlines and major alliances, so when I go to redeem if there isn't availability with one I simply query another.
But it's also because I redeem mostly for premium class international travel, and while those tickets aren't always available on all routes by any means, I've often seen the biggest complaints - with a few notable exceptions - to be about the old fashioned 25,000 mile domestic awards. And those are hardly the best value anyway.

I'd just assume pay my $250 - $400 for a flight between DC and California, earn miles on those flights, and use the miles for a much greater return: the $10,000+ ticket I could never afford to purchase but that makes travel more than just an uncomfortable means to get from A to B. Plus, there are a few tricks to the process.
Recently I used United Mileage Plus miles for two international first class awards from DC to Phuket, Thailand, with a stopover in Hong Kong on the return. That's not the kind of award that the United website lets you search for, so it requires a phone call.

Customers call and get told nothing's available. But that doesn't mean nothing's available. Agents may be poorly trained. It may take work, the computer systems they're working with aren't perfect by any means and may only check a limited number of simple routings. And they may not want to go through all the work of testing segments one at a time, even if it occurs to them that they could.
So I've found one big secret to booking award travel is to do the legwork yourself. That's hard to do on the phone with testy agents. But it's much easier to do by yourself. But most airlines don't let you do it! On their own websites, anyway.

The first thing to do is know the routings. Know the partners. Who flies where you're trying to go? And especially if you're looking for a premium class seat (and you really should be...), but even for coach, start with the hardest part of the trip to get. In this case it was the transpacific segmetns. Look, I know I can get from DC to Chicago or the West Coast and back. The hard part is going to be finding first class seats across the Pacific.
So before I call United I write out United's partners that fly across the Pacific and the routes that they fly. Then I check for availability on those specific flights. And once I find availability, I work forwards and backwards from there, in order to (1) get to the transpacific gateway city, and (2) get from the destination of the flight I've found to the city I'm actually trying to get to, if necessary.

The way I do this when redeeming United miles is that I've signed up for an ANA Mileage Plan account. And ANA Mileage Plan members can use that program's website to check availability on most of their Star Alliance partner's flights. (Swissair seems not to come up as an option on the ANA site.) Air Canada offers something similar, though the ANA site performs better for me.
Working with other airlines it is often the case that you'll need to sign up with frequent flyer accounts with many of the carrier's partners and check each partner individually. A pain, perhaps, but worth the payoff when looking for the elusive three-cabin first seats to Asia.
Now it should be said that the results found on the ANA website are not going to be a perfect match for what United will let you book. ANA does a good job telling you what seats a Star Allaince carrier is making available as an award. But United then filters availability with some parnters on certain routes. So while Thai Airways might be offering an award seat from London to Bangkok, United might reply "not available." They make it sound like Thai isn't offering it, when in reality United just refuses to pay for it.

United uses a system called StarNet for booking these awards, and agents are only supposed to book what comes up there. Used to be that you could still grab an available seat via a 'manual sell'... The agent sends a message to the partner carrier asking them for the award seat, and then it would come back confirmed, bypassing United's filtering in StarNet entirely. But that's exceedingly rare these days, as customer service reps are no longer supposed to do it.
I find the biggest problems with United's filtering to be on Lufthansa, especially routes within Europe, and also premium class long-haul on Thai. They really don't need to do much filtering with Singapre, as those seats are hard enough to come by on their own! (Although I'm always surprised by how much business class availability on Singapore is out there, and how frequently I can find a single seat in First... It's that second seat on the same flights that's so often vexxing.)

Still, the ANA tool is an excellent starting place, and tells you what flights to ask for when calling United. Doing the work for the agent on the other end of the phone is one of the absolute keys to finding the award seats you want.

It's also helpful to know when to look for seats. United in particular releases seats both early and late. Check 5+ months out, check a couple weeks before departure, check 2-3 days before departure. Now, if you're like me you look obsessively more often. And revenue management will release seats at various times. The idea for the airline is to offer as awards those seats they're confident won't be sold, and at the same time ensure that customers don't book award seats that they'd otherwise purchase with cash.
Some seats get released when schedules are loaded 330 days out. But the 'I called 330 days out and the seats were already gone!' complaint misses the point. There may not have been any seats released yet. And just because seats aren't available, doesn't mean that they won't become available.

At least until United's premium cabin availability shrinks dramatically (and perhaps even then) with the introduction of their new business and first class cabins, it's pretty much a lock to be able to find premium class transpacific flights days before departure.
This isn't true with all airlines. In some cases, once seats have been booked, no more will be released, even in the case of an empty cabin. But United definitely dumps unsold seats into award inventory very frequently in the days leading up to a flight.
Check it yourself -- search for international first and business class 2-3 days forward on various transpacific routes and you'll be shocked at how easy they are to get.

Ok, fair enough, you don't want to wait to plan a spur of the moment vacation. But you don't have to. Just plan the best itinerary you possibly can when you're doing your initial booking and "trade up." Look for better seats. Maybe you found an undesireable routing, or you only found coach. Book it, lock in your trip, and then call back to make a change. Unless you're a United 1K you'll have to pay $100 per ticket, but it's a fee I'd find worth it to go from coach to 3-cabin first for a day of flying in each direction.

A JetBlue Airlines Nightmare Story


The fact is that these smaller upstart airlines like JetBlue, Air Tran, Spirit, etc have taken away business from the major airlines. They've done it by competing with new planes, better service, different entertainment, and some times better fares. Sometimes things go terribly wrong-read what happened to this JetBlue customer.

Here is a letter from one of our readers about JetBlue:

Let me start off by saying I was a huge JetBlue fan and supporter that is until the night of (Feb15-16)

This was by far the worst JetBlue experience I have ever had from start to finish.

First my JetBlue flight was canceled (3PM las-jfk Wed. Feb15- Next the flight I was put on was supposed to leave a 12:30am (FLT# 190 las-jfk) the website and phone system said it was on time.

I arrived at the Las Vegas airport at 11pm on Thurs (Feb15) to discover that I was completely mislead. It turned out FLT#190 was delayed 6 hours. I had to wait and wound up passing out on the airport floor from exhaustion. At 4:30 AM now (Feb. 16) I was put on what I was told was going to be a "JetBlue" flight and that my luggage would arrive with my flight as well.

Then I find out its a charter plane from a company called Omni which is probably one of the worst planes I have been on with non JetBlue employees as the attendants. with the luggage coming 2hours later on another plane.
I spent over $400 for one way to fly the JetBlue experience and nothing less - that's not what I got.

Because of the misinformation I lost a whole day of work and a nights sleep. The charter plane got me into JFK at 1:30PM Fri. I missed an important business meeting that I had to be at on Friday AM - losing thousands of dollars in sales.
Needless to say my loved ones were confused as the JetBlue web site said the 1240am flight was cancelled, then taking off at 6AM

Even though as a new airline They don't participate in Rule 240.(with rules about what to be done in a case like this)

No effort was made to see if a seat could of been found on another airline going back to New York City- which was the least that could of been done. Then to top it all off my luggage didn't come on another plane 2 hours later as was promised to be delivered on Friday- I got it Monday at 1PM.

Saturday AM and early PM I was on the phone for hours as JetBlue's special baggage line (866--- ----) rang 3-4 times and went to dead air and on a second phone calling 800 JetBlue and could not get through.

After having my luggage missing for the 2nd day with no clean clothes to go to a wedding celebration I tried calling JetBlue to get permission to buy clothes I needed for a wedding and toiletries and health and beauty aids. Not being able to get to talk to somebody I did what other airlines allow I had to go out to buy clothes and health and beauty aids I needed

When I finally got my baggage from the flight on Monday I find missing my black pinstripe suit from Barney's New York that cost $975

the following are the monies I asked to be paid back to me by JetBlue

Frequent-flier accounts are filled to bursting, but booking a seat has never been harder.


"Last year marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the launch of the first frequent-flier program, American Airlines' AAdvantage, which in less than a decade spawned countless similar loyalty schemes throughout the industry and created a generation of mileage junkies. But don't feel left out if you didn't notice: The occasion came and went without much fanfare. In fact, instead of celebrating the free flights and upgrades promised by these programs, most travelers found that it was more difficult than ever to wring an award ticket out of the airlines. "Whenever my wife and I want to fly someplace, it seems like there's no way to use our miles," says Ed Reagan, a Pennsylvania-based financial consultant.

Reagan is not alone. More than half of the 750 readers of Condé Nast Traveler recently polled report that it has become more difficult to redeem frequent-flier miles in the past year, and nearly 70 percent say that it's gotten tougher over the last five years. Although the airlines do not disclose the percentage of passengers who have tried unsuccessfully to redeem miles for a ticket, the most recent data provided by the six largest U.S. carriers (American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, and US Airways) shows that most of them are issuing fewer tickets in exchange for miles. On Continental, for example, the number of award tickets issued fell from 8.1 percent of all tickets in 2002 to 6.8 percent in 2006; on United, it fell from 7.8 percent in 2002 to 6.6 percent in 2005.

"Certainly, the anecdotal evidence would indicate that it's never been tougher to redeem miles," says Tim Winship, publisher of FrequentFlier.com, noting that on some flights to the most popular destinations, carriers don't set aside a single seat for a mileage award.

As bad as the squeeze is in the back of the plane, things have gotten even tighter up front: US Airways recently announced that it is reducing the first-class section on its 757s from eight rows to two, and air marshals now occupy two seats in many first-class sections, representing as much as 25 percent of capacity in that class on many domestic flights. Even elite members are feeling the crunch, losing benefits such as free upgrades, bonus mileage, and access to airport lounges as some airlines make elite status more difficult to achieve. Continental, for instance, no longer applies mileage earned through promotional or partner offers, or even through certain low-fare tickets, toward elite qualification.

Why the new stinginess? First, with airplanes flying at record capacity (an average of 80 percent of seats are filled with paying passengers on every flight), fewer seats are available. And now that the airlines are beginning to fly profitably after six years of devastating losses, they're understandably reluctant to give anything away for free. Another reason is that there's simply a glut of miles. A full 60 percent of miles earned today are awarded for purchases other than plane tickets, as carriers rake in hundreds of millions of dollars for the billions of miles they sell to credit card and other companies that use them to lure consumers." But with the Emerald Club Aisle, you can bypass the counter and choose any car on this exclusive section of the lot when you reserve a midsize car. With our dedication to bringing you the industry's newest fleet, the Emerald Club Aisle has the most up-to-date midsize cars to choose from.

Get an E-receiptBy choosing automatic E-Receipts, there's no need to wait for an agent to give you a receipt. Instead, we'll automatically email it to you after each rental.
Choose your rewards

Choose Free Rental Days or airline miles as your reward.
Free Rental Days
You earn one Free Rental Day after seven rental credits. You earn one rental credit per paid rental or for every four consecutive paid days. You can also earn bonus rental credits by taking advantage of Emerald Club promotions. Redeeming Free Rental Days is easy, too. We've put everything you need online.


Earn Airline Miles
With The Emerald Club, hitting the road can get you up in the air. You can choose to automatically earn airline miles with one of our many airline partners.

Aspire higher
Your Emerald Club membership helps make business travel easy and efficient, but you can enjoy even more with Emerald Club Executive. Additional benefits of Executive status include:

• Only National offers the Executive Selection - a special area of our lot featuring fullsize and higher class cars. Simply reserve a midsize or fullsize car, bypass the counter, choose your car and pay only the reserved midsize rate. Every time you rent from the Executive Selection, you receive an upgrade. As an Emerald Club Executive member, you always pay for one car class less than reserved when you book a fullsize through luxury car. (For example, if you rent a premium car, you only pay the fullsize rate.)

• Free Rental Day with just six rental credits.
To move up to Executive, just make 12 to 24 paid rentals or have 40 to 84 paid rental days during a calendar year.

Expedited Emerald Club Service - Get on your way faster! 
At locations where the Emerald Club Aisle isn't available, you'll find a special service counter exclusively for Emerald Club members. With our priority service, you'll be on the road in no time. Some locations feature an Emerald Club booth on the lot where you can pick up your keys and go.

Emerald Reserve Service - When size matters, bypass the counter with the car of your choice. If you need to confirm a car other than a midsize, Emerald Reserve Service is available at more than 50 airport locations across the United States and Canada. When you arrive at the lot, bypass the counter and choose from the row of cars in the class you reserved.
