"Vacation Spotlight" VIVA LOS CABOS BY, MARK AUSTIN
"AN HOUR AFTER A FOURTH SHOT OF tequila and two red bull and vodka pick-me-ups, and a mile outside the city limits of San José del Cabo, the epiphany came. I had in my foggy head the perfect pilot for any of the growing number of Spanish-speaking stations. Because if it wouldn’t fly for HBO’s late-night schedule, HBO Latino would be all over it.
Call it Cabo Cab Confessions.
After all, can you imagine all the crap my cab driver Paco has heard on those rides down that dark stretch of highway leading out of Cabo San Lucas and back to any of the palatial digs a guy and his buddies can score with a few hundred dollars a night? Our little ride alone probably had him reaching for his Rosary and offering up a few Hail Marys.
Maybe it was the part about an afternoon that began in a beachside pool at the Meliá San Lucas hotel on Médano Beach — a pool filled with mostly intoxicated men and women wading in water clouded by spilled margaritas and piña coladas from the bar in the center. In four feet of water, it’s easy for everyone’s inner child to shed their water wings and their inhibitions.
Maybe it was the part about kicking off the night in town with a shot or two at Nowhere Bar, right on the marina in Cabo, where the locals and turistas alike congregate to get their game face on for the rest of the evening.
Maybe it was the spin through El Squid Roe, the famous joint (see any one of a dozen Wild On E! shows for confirmation) that transforms from a friendly family restaurant in the early evening into a two-story, tequila-and-music fest that only picks up momentum in the wee hours of the morning. If it is possible to grow weary of the action on the dance floor, the wallflowers can get a laugh from the creative signage adorning the walls.." [Via playermagazine.us]
